The melting of the Thwaites Glacier, widely recognized as the "Doomsday Glacier" and considered one of the world's largest and most dangerous ice formations, could lead to catastrophic consequences for several nations.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Daily Express, that the potential collapse or accelerated melting of the Thwaites Glacier poses an existential threat to various countries.

According to the report, the nations most vulnerable to rising sea levels resulting from this phenomenon include the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, Bangladesh, Tuvalu, and the Maldives. Experts warn that in these countries, coastal cities and even entire island nations could face submersion.

The Thwaites Glacier serves as a critical component of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, acting as a "cork" that maintains the stability of the entire ice system. Its potential collapse could trigger a cascading effect, leading to more widespread ice loss. Spanning approximately 192,000 square kilometers—slightly smaller than the island of Great Britain—the glacier is located in the Amundsen Sea and features an ocean contact line of about 120 kilometers.

Specialists estimate that the total collapse of this glacier could raise global sea levels by approximately 3.3 meters, precipitating a severe global climate and ecological crisis. The Thwaites Glacier has been a subject of intense scientific study for decades, with international research teams, such as the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, monitoring its structural integrity due to its pivotal role in regulating global sea levels.
