First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva has shared a post on her official social media accounts commemorating the anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the post honors the memory of the innocent victims who lost their lives during the bloody events perpetrated by Soviet troops in Baku on January 20, 1990.

"I honor the dear memory of the innocent victims of the January 20 tragedy with deep respect. May Allah rest the souls of all our martyrs!" the First Vice President stated in her post.

January 20, 1990, known as "Black January," remains a pivotal turning point in the history of Azerbaijan's independence. On that night, under orders from the Soviet leadership, 26,000 Soviet troops entered Baku and other regions of Azerbaijan to suppress the national independence movement. The military intervention resulted in the deaths of 147 civilians and left hundreds more injured or missing. This event is regarded as a symbol of national unity and the indomitable will of the Azerbaijani people in their struggle for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
