US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that certain progress has been achieved in the ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Rubio made these remarks during a press conference held within the framework of the NATO Foreign Ministers' meeting in Sweden. The Secretary of State highlighted that while diplomatic channels remain active, the fundamental security requirements of the United States and its allies regarding regional stability remain a priority.
“There have been certain improvements in the ongoing discussions. I do not want to overstate it, but there is progress, and this is normal. However, the core issues remain unchanged: Iran cannot be allowed to possess nuclear weapons,” Rubio stated. He further noted that for a definitive resolution, the issue of uranium enrichment, including the production of highly enriched uranium, must be fully addressed. Rubio also raised concerns regarding the Strait of Hormuz, claiming that Tehran is attempting to implement a payment system for passage. “They are trying to convince Oman to join the idea of making international waterways subject to fees,” he added, emphasizing that no country should accept such an approach to international maritime routes.
These discussions occur as the administration of US President Donald Trump continues to prioritize maritime security and nuclear non-proliferation in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global oil transit point, and any attempt to restrict or tax passage through these waters has significant implications for global energy markets. The meeting in Sweden serves as a platform for NATO allies to coordinate their stance on Iranian influence and ensure that international law is upheld in strategic waterways, reflecting the broader foreign policy objectives of the Republic of Azerbaijan's partners in maintaining regional peace.
