NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has welcomed the decision by US President Donald Trump to deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Reuters, that the alliance chief expressed his support for the move during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers held in Sweden.
Addressing the gathering, Rutte stated that military commanders are currently reviewing the operational details of the deployment. "I certainly welcome this statement. Our military commanders are looking at all the details, but of course, I support this," he emphasized. The Secretary General noted that the primary objective is to make Europe stronger while gradually reducing defense reliance on the United States. "Let us be clear: the path we have chosen is a stronger Europe and a stronger NATO. This path will, over time, make us less dependent on one ally—the United States. This, in turn, will allow Washington to focus more on its other priorities," Rutte added.
The decision follows a recent announcement by US President Donald Trump, who cited his strong working relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki as a key factor in the agreement to send 5,000 additional American personnel to the country. Poland, a key NATO member on the alliance's eastern flank, has consistently advocated for an increased US military presence to enhance regional security and deterrence. This deployment is expected to further solidify the strategic partnership between Washington and Warsaw within the broader framework of transatlantic defense cooperation.
