The Embassy of Latvia in Baku has strongly condemned the drone strikes carried out by Iran today against the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, the Latvian diplomatic mission in Azerbaijan expressed its position in a post on the X social media platform.
"The Embassy of Latvia in Azerbaijan strongly condemns the UAV attacks in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, which resulted in damage to the airport and injuries to civilians, representing a violation of the principles of international law. We express our solidarity with Azerbaijan and reaffirm our support for peace and security in the region," the diplomatic mission stated.
The incident occurred on March 5, when unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched from Iranian territory targeted facilities within Nakhchivan. One drone struck the terminal building of the Nakhchivan International Airport, while another landed near a school building in the village of Shekarabad. The attack on the airport resulted in injuries to four civilians. Following the strikes, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchilu, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Azerbaijan has officially declared that it reserves the right to deliver a retaliatory strike.
Nakhchivan, an exclave of the Republic of Azerbaijan, holds significant strategic importance and shares borders with Turkey, Armenia, and Iran. This escalation comes amid heightened regional tensions, and the targeting of civilian infrastructure like international airports is viewed by Baku as a grave provocation. Azerbaijan has consistently called for the respect of its sovereign borders and the maintenance of regional stability in the South Caucasus.
