Germany will deploy a mine-countermeasures vessel to the Mediterranean Sea as a preliminary step toward a potential mission in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure navigation safety. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the move in an interview with the German newspaper "Rheinische Post."

According to Pistorius, any overseas deployment of German forces is only possible with a mandate from the Bundestag. To shorten the reaction time for future operations, the decision was made to pre-position a portion of the naval units in the Mediterranean. "We will send a mine-countermeasures ship to the Mediterranean and assign a command-and-supply ship to it. To provide support in the Strait of Hormuz region, we will temporarily redistribute some of our obligations in other regions in coordination with our partners," the minister stated. He added that this approach would accelerate deployment once a formal political decision is reached.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, serving as a primary transit route for global oil and gas supplies. Germany's proactive stance follows the precedent set during the preparation for the European Union's "Aspides" naval mission in the Red Sea, where vessels were positioned ahead of official parliamentary confirmation to protect international shipping from regional threats. This strategic move underscores Berlin's commitment to maintaining the stability of global energy supply chains and ensuring the freedom of navigation in high-risk zones.
