Five candidates seeking to represent France’s center-left in the 2027 presidential election were divided on Wednesday over whether to cooperate with the far-left France Unbowed party, according to the original report.
Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure, former presidential candidate Segolene Royal and lawmaker Emmanuel Maurel declined to rule out cooperation with the group in legislative elections. European Parliament member Raphael Glucksmann and lawmaker Jerome Guedj opposed such an arrangement.
Dispute over a possible left-wing alliance
Glucksmann said there would be no agreement with France Unbowed in either the presidential or legislative elections. He argued that an alliance with Jean-Luc Melenchon’s party would reduce the left’s chances of defeating the far right.
Faure urged the candidates to focus on the possibility of a far-right victory, while Royal and Maurel argued that cooperation across the left should not be ruled out.
Candidates clash over Gaza
The candidates also disagreed over the war in Gaza. Royal said the actions of Israel’s current leaders should be considered in discussions about rising antisemitism and called for more Israeli and Jewish voices to speak out about the situation in Gaza.
Guedj and Glucksmann rejected that position, saying Jewish people should not be expected to answer for the policies of the Israeli government.
Faure said the term “genocide” should be used to describe events in Gaza, a characterization Glucksmann has declined to adopt.
Primary voting schedule
Members of the parties participating in the primary will vote online on October 9-10. A second round, if required, will take place on October 16-17.
Non-members of the participating parties can also register to vote by paying a fee of €15 ($17). The winner will become the social-democratic candidate in next year’s presidential election.
President Emmanuel Macron cannot seek a third consecutive term.
