France has decided to intensify security measures along its border with Spain in response to a significant surge in migration from North Africa.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced the decision via his social media account on X, addressing the critical situation emerging in Ceuta, a Spanish territory located in North Africa.
The minister confirmed that he has ordered an immediate strengthening of border controls. To ensure security at border crossing points, the "Rapid Border Intervention Forces" have been mobilized. This decision follows reports of mass illegal migration attempts originating from the coast of Castillejos, Morocco, toward Ceuta. Recent incidents involving over 800 migrants attempting to cross the border by swimming have significantly heightened regional tensions.
According to data provided by the Spanish government, it is estimated that the number of individuals entering Ceuta over the past 24 hours has exceeded 49,000. In response, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that all available state resources have been mobilized. To regain control of the situation and restore security, the Spanish government has authorized the deployment of armed forces to the region.
The Ceuta enclave, situated on the northern coast of Africa, has long been a focal point for migration issues between the European Union and North African nations. The border, which separates the Spanish territory from Morocco, is frequently subject to pressure from migrants seeking entry into Europe, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by EU member states in managing external borders and migration flows.
