The death toll from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao island in the Philippines on June 8 has risen to 78, according to the latest reports. The Operative Information Center-OMM, citing data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) via GMA News, confirmed the updated figures as search and rescue operations continue in the affected areas.
The disaster has had a significant humanitarian impact, affecting more than 1.4 million people, or over 346,000 families. The structural damage is extensive, with 74,657 homes reported damaged; of these, 13,681 were completely destroyed, while 60,976 sustained partial damage. Furthermore, over 770 infrastructure facilities have been impacted, with initial damage estimates reaching 148 million Philippine pesos (over $2.4 million).
Seismologists continue to monitor the region, having recorded 7,461 aftershocks since the initial tremor. The Philippines, situated along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is highly prone to seismic activity due to its location at the intersection of several tectonic plates, making such large-scale earthquakes a recurring challenge for the archipelago's disaster management infrastructure.
