A severe storm accompanied by heavy rainfall has struck Nigeria's Jigawa state, resulting in significant casualties and widespread infrastructure damage.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Hannafi Fagam, the executive secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), confirmed that the natural disaster has claimed the lives of 7 people, while 53 others sustained injuries of varying severity.
The storm's impact has been extensive, affecting 5,403 households and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. Furthermore, critical infrastructure has been severely damaged, including 47 primary and secondary schools, 3 hospitals, and 2 police stations. In response, the state government has established temporary shelters for displaced families and initiated emergency relief efforts, including the distribution of food and medical supplies. Authorities are currently conducting an assessment to determine the full extent of the damage and the ongoing needs of the affected population.
Jigawa state, located in northern Nigeria, is frequently susceptible to extreme weather events during the rainy season. Such storms often lead to flash flooding and structural failures in regions where infrastructure resilience remains a significant challenge for local authorities and humanitarian agencies.
