The European Commission intends to approve a new package of sanctions against Russia by February 24, marking a significant escalation in economic pressure. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Anuar El-Anouni, the official spokesperson for the European Union (EU) on foreign affairs, announced this during a briefing.
The diplomat noted that EU member states are currently actively discussing the details of the measures. According to official reports, the 20th sanctions package is timed to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the military conflict in Ukraine. Brussels' primary objective is to deprive Russia of the tools, goods, and technologies essential for maintaining military operations.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined the potential content of the new restrictions and urged member states to approve the document promptly. This move is part of a broader strategy previously announced by Kaya Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Since the beginning of the conflict, the European Union has progressively implemented restrictive measures targeting Russia's financial, energy, and technology sectors to diminish its economic capabilities.
