French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that the evolving situation around Greenland has become an alarming strategic signal for Europe, necessitating a formal review of regional policy.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that, according to foreign media outlets, the French leader called for a more robust European presence in the northern latitudes.
"The situation around Greenland is a disturbing strategic signal for all of Europe in terms of asserting sovereignty, contributing to Arctic security, combating foreign interference and disinformation, addressing climate change, developing privileged partnerships in sustainable development, and reducing strategic dependence. The European Union must revise its Arctic strategy in 2026. We also support NATO's growing presence in the Arctic through the establishment of a high-vigilance regime and are ready to join it," he noted.
He further added that France proposes accelerating the implementation of the strategic partnership signed between the European Union and Greenland in 2023. Macron emphasized that this partnership will allow for the development of cooperation in the field of strategic raw materials, which is vital for Europe's industrial autonomy.
The Arctic region has gained significant geopolitical importance in recent years due to melting ice caps opening new shipping routes and providing access to vast untapped natural resources. As global powers like Russia and China increase their activities in the High North, the EU and NATO have been forced to reassess their security postures to protect territorial integrity and environmental interests. France, as a leading EU member state, views the stability of the Arctic as essential to broader European energy security and defense policy.
