"Amid disagreements regarding Greenland, the United States continues to exert economic pressure on the European Union in certain sectors, including pharmaceuticals and digital services."

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that these remarks were made by French President Emmanuel Macron.

President Macron expressed his conviction that Europeans should not seek compromises under these circumstances, noting that such a strategy has proven ineffective in recent months. He emphasized that maintaining this position leads to an increased reliance on Washington, highlighting that 60% of Europe's natural gas supplies currently originate from the United States.

Furthermore, Macron voiced skepticism regarding the willingness of the United States to continue providing security guarantees for the European Union. These comments come in the wake of an announcement on January 31 by US President Donald Trump regarding the commencement of negotiations over the future ownership of Greenland, where he expressed hope for an agreement beneficial to both the US and Europe.

The relationship between the European Union and the United States has faced increasing complexity as debates over strategic autonomy and energy security intensify. President Macron has long advocated for "strategic autonomy," urging European nations to reduce their military and economic dependence on external powers to ensure the continent's long-term sovereignty and stability in a shifting geopolitical landscape.
