The Sabail District Court in Baku has sentenced Etibar Oktay oglu Imamverdiyev to six years in prison for his involvement in illegal telecommunications activities and cybercrime. Imamverdiyev was convicted under Articles 233-4.2.3 and 273.4 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, following a comprehensive investigation into his activities involving unauthorized access to state infrastructure.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the State Security Service (SSS) uncovered a transnational network organized by Imamverdiyev that provided illegal international telecommunication services within Azerbaijan. Having been placed on an international wanted list, he was detained in a foreign country and extradited to Azerbaijan following extensive legal proceedings. Investigations revealed that Imamverdiyev, along with several accomplices, used specialized equipment to secretly access the national telecommunications network, bypassing official channels by routing international calls through the internet using local mobile operators' SIM cards.
These activities not only bypassed state oversight but also involved unauthorized interference with critical computer systems of state-important infrastructure. The court proceedings highlighted that these actions posed a threat to national security and caused substantial financial losses to the "AzInTelecom" company, which operates under the Azerbaijan Transport and Communication Holding (AZCON). In recent years, the State Security Service has intensified its efforts to combat transnational cybercrime and protect the integrity of the digital and telecommunications infrastructure in Azerbaijan against unauthorized external interference.
