The British Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Fergus Auld, has strongly condemned the recent drone strikes launched by Iran against Nakhchivan, describing the act as "completely unacceptable."
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the ambassador shared this statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. "The United Kingdom resolutely condemns any action that threatens the security of Azerbaijan. We stand in full solidarity with Azerbaijan and those affected during this difficult time. The embassy is closely monitoring the situation," the ambassador emphasized.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of March 5, when two Iranian drones targeted the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. According to official reports, one drone struck the terminal building of the Nakhchivan International Airport, while the second fell near a school building in the village of Shekarabad. The strikes resulted in injuries to four individuals and caused damage to local infrastructure.
The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is an exclave of the Republic of Azerbaijan, sharing borders with Armenia, Iran, and Türkiye. Given its strategic location, any military provocation in this region raises significant security concerns for the South Caucasus. This incident follows a period of heightened regional tensions and underscores the importance of maintaining stability along international borders. International observers note that such escalations pose a direct threat to civil aviation and civilian safety in the region.
