Azerbaijan aims to expand the land area under modern irrigation systems to 300,000 hectares by 2030, up from 130,000 hectares recorded in 2025.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, this was announced by Minister of Agriculture Majnun Mammadov during a meeting dedicated to agricultural issues chaired by President Ilham Aliyev. The minister emphasized that this expansion will significantly boost agricultural productivity, enhance the welfare of farmers in the regions, and strengthen Azerbaijan's export potential for various agricultural products.
Minister Mammadov also noted that a pilot project for land consolidation and the establishment of closed modern on-farm irrigation networks will be implemented in two districts. This initiative is expected to ensure more efficient use of land and water resources. Furthermore, Azerbaijan has set a target to achieve a yield of 5 tons per hectare for both wheat and cotton in specialized districts over the next five years through modern irrigation, technical support, and the use of high-yield seeds.
In recent years, Azerbaijan has been actively modernizing its agricultural sector to ensure food security and mitigate the impacts of global climate change. The transition to water-saving technologies, such as drip and sprinkler irrigation, is a key priority in the state's strategy to optimize water resource management across the country.
