The United States, Iran, and regional mediators are continuing efforts to reach a 45-day ceasefire agreement, according to reports from the US-based Axios news platform.

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, sources indicate that while the probability of reaching an agreement within 48 hours remains low, the move is being viewed as a final opportunity to prevent further escalation of the conflict.

Mediators are currently working with the parties on a two-stage agreement:

  • First stage: Declaration of a 45-day ceasefire.
  • Second stage: Negotiations for a permanent peace during this period.

The discussions are reportedly being conducted through the mediation of Türkiye, Egypt, and Pakistan, as well as through messaging between US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. It is claimed that the US and Israel have already prepared a large-scale attack plan against Iran's energy facilities should diplomacy fail.

US President Donald Trump has extended the 48-hour deadline previously given to Tehran until April 8, aiming to create an additional window for a potential deal. Issues regarding the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's enriched uranium program are emphasized as components that can only be resolved as part of a final agreement. Previously, US President Donald Trump, who threatened Iran if the Strait of Hormuz was not opened within 48 hours, announced the extension of the deadline via his social media account.

The current diplomatic tension follows months of heightened regional instability. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes daily. A potential ceasefire is seen by international observers as a vital step toward stabilizing global energy markets and preventing a broader regional confrontation in the Middle East.
