Yemeni government forces said Sunday they targeted Houthi personnel and equipment in the central province of Al-Bayda and downed a drone near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in southwestern Taiz, according to Anadolu Agency.
Military spokesman Majed al-Nazili said government forces had targeted positions belonging to the Iran-backed Houthi group in Al-Bayda. He also released video footage that he said showed the strikes, but provided no further details.
Drone shot down near strategic strait
Separately, the government-aligned Nation’s Shield Forces said its 1st Brigade shot down a Houthi drone flying over the Kahboub front near Bab el-Mandeb.
The force released footage it said showed parts of the downed drone. The Houthis did not immediately comment on the claim.
Fighting reported on several fronts
Clashes were reported on several fronts in Taiz province in recent hours, although neither side said it had made territorial gains. Relative calm prevailed in the central province of Marib and the northern province of Al-Jawf, with no major clashes reported, an Anadolu correspondent said.
Fighting has intensified across several parts of Yemen, including Taiz, Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Bayda and Lahj. It marks the most serious escalation since a UN-brokered truce in April 2022.
The conflict escalated in September, when the Houthis captured key positions in Al Hudaydah and Taiz, including the strategic city of Mokha and Perim Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s major shipping routes.
Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and several provinces in September 2014. A Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.
