The United States has denied visas to the media team accompanying Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on his planned visit to New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, an Iranian official said Monday, according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency.
Habibollah Abbasi, director general of public relations at the Iranian presidency, said the Iranian public would be kept informed about developments concerning bilateral meetings Pezeshkian is expected to hold during the visit.
Details of Pezeshkian’s planned visit
Abbasi said the visit would last five days, including two days allocated for travel. The president will be accompanied by Mohsen Haji-Mirzaei, chief of staff of the Iranian presidency, and Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, deputy head of presidential protocol and ceremonies.
During his stay in New York, Pezeshkian is expected to meet several leaders attending the UN meetings. US authorities have not commented on the reported visa refusals.
US-Iran tensions remain high
The development comes amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran. Negotiations between the two countries remain stalled over disagreements involving navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for energy and commodity supplies.
On Feb. 28, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with strikes on Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets.
