The territory of Azerbaijan is currently facing an increase in both flood risks and drought conditions, highlighting the growing volatility of regional climate patterns.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that this assessment was highlighted in the address by President Ilham Aliyev regarding the 2026 World Environment Day.

The head of state emphasized that water scarcity is a matter of serious concern not only for Azerbaijan but for the entire region. "The fact that the water level of the Caspian Sea is approaching the lowest level recorded in the last two hundred years is a clear indicator of the severity of the problem," President Ilham Aliyev stated.

The President noted that a clean environment and "green growth" have been established as one of the five core national priorities for the socio-economic development of Azerbaijan through 2030. "In accordance with this priority, purposeful efforts are being made to increase green spaces and forest areas, ensure the efficient use of water resources and sustainable energy sources, and create modern infrastructure for waste management," the head of state emphasized.

The Caspian Sea, the world's largest inland body of water, is vital to the economies and ecosystems of the surrounding littoral states. Fluctuations in its water levels are influenced by a complex interplay of river inflow, evaporation rates, and tectonic activity. As climate change accelerates, regional cooperation among Caspian nations has become increasingly essential to manage water resources and mitigate the environmental impact of receding coastlines.
