An event titled "Peace-based climate action through solutions in urban planning in conflict and fragile settings" is being held in Cairo within the framework of the 13th session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13).
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the event is jointly organized by the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture of Azerbaijan, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the Baku Climate and Peace Action Hub, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The session features participation from Gulshan Rzayeva, Deputy Head of Staff of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture and Deputy National Coordinator for WUF13; Anna Soave, Head of the UN-Habitat Office in Azerbaijan; Elshad Iskdandarov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and other high-level officials. Discussions focus on climate change, the establishment of sustainable settlements in post-conflict periods, mechanisms for safe return, and urban resilience.
The World Urban Forum, established by the United Nations in 2001, is the premier global conference on sustainable urbanization. This year's discussions are particularly significant for Azerbaijan as the country continues its large-scale "Great Return" program, focusing on the sustainable reconstruction of the Garabagh and East Zangezur regions. By integrating climate-smart solutions into the rebuilding of cities like Shusha, Aghdam, and Fuzuli, Azerbaijan aims to create a global model for post-conflict ecological and urban recovery.
