On June 5, the first consular consultations were held in Madrid between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Azerbaijani delegation was led by Emil Safarov, Head of the Consular Department, while the Spanish delegation was headed by Carolina Alvarez, Director General for Spaniards Abroad and Consular Affairs.

During the consultations, the parties reviewed the current state and development prospects of bilateral cooperation in the consular sphere. Key topics included the potential for signing new bilateral agreements and the digitalization of consular services to enhance efficiency for citizens of both nations.

The discussions also covered a broad range of issues, including the protection of the rights and freedoms of citizens, as well as cooperation in justice, law enforcement, migration, education, and visa policy. These consultations mark a significant step in strengthening the diplomatic and administrative ties between Azerbaijan and Spain, reflecting a mutual interest in deepening institutional collaboration.

Consular consultations are a standard diplomatic mechanism used by states to address practical issues related to the movement of people, legal assistance, and administrative cooperation. By formalizing these discussions, Azerbaijan and Spain aim to streamline bureaucratic processes and foster closer people-to-people connections, which are essential components of modern international relations.
