Hailstorm hits Kalbajar region in Azerbaijan

On August 20, the second half of the day saw intermittent lightning and rainfall across several regions of Azerbaijan. According to information provided by the National Hydrometeorological Service to the Operative Information Center-OMM, some areas experienced intense, torrential downpours.

Precipitation levels were recorded across various locations, with 18 mm in Shahdag, 17 mm in Gadabay, 15 mm in Dashkasan, 10 mm in Gusar, 6 mm in Ismayilli, 5 mm in Goygol, 4 mm in Khinalig (Guba), and up to 1 mm in Aghdam, Gabala, Gakh, Goranboy, Ganja, Naftalan, Khaltan, Tovuz, Zagatala, Tartar, Barda, Yevlax, Kalbajar, Lachin, Qubadli, Shusha, Khankendi, Khojaly, and Fuzuli.

Specifically, between 20:25 and 20:33 on August 20, a hailstorm with hailstone diameters of 8-10 mm occurred in the Alagollar area of the Istisu settlement in the Kalbajar district.

Meteorological data also indicates strong north-westerly winds, with maximum speeds reaching 21 m/s in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, 19 m/s in Julfa, 18 m/s in Ganja, and 16 m/s in Shamkir, Shabran, and Naftalan.

The Kalbajar district, located in the mountainous part of Azerbaijan, is known for its complex climate, which often features rapid weather changes, particularly during the summer months. The National Hydrometeorological Service continues to monitor the situation to assess any potential impact on local infrastructure and agriculture in the region.
