Since the end of July, at least 72,000 illegal migrants have crossed from the Moroccan coast of Fnideq into the Spanish city of Ceuta.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing foreign media, this was announced by Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska during a press conference following a meeting of European Union (EU) interior ministers.
According to the minister, approximately 70,000 of these individuals have since returned to Morocco. Local media outlets have reported that the death toll among those attempting to cross into Spanish territory has reached 75.
It should be noted that on July 30, tens of thousands of migrants attempted to enter the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla from the Moroccan coast of Fnideq, either by swimming or on foot. Following this mass attempt, the Spanish government reinforced border security by deploying additional military forces to the region. Ceuta and Melilla, located on the North African coast, serve as the only land borders between the European Union and the African continent, making them frequent focal points for migration crises and diplomatic tensions between Spain and Morocco.
