Construction and renovation works in Icherisheher (Old City) that have not been approved by the relevant administration are now officially prohibited.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, President Ilham Aliyev has signed a decree amending the "Regulations on the Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve."
Under the new provisions, it is strictly forbidden to damage or destroy monuments located within the reserve's territory. Furthermore, any construction, installation, restoration, reconstruction, conservation, or landscaping activities that threaten the integrity of these monuments or are conducted without the administration's authorization are prohibited.
Icherisheher, often referred to as the "Old City," is the historical core of Baku and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is renowned for its medieval walls, the iconic Maiden Tower, and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. These new regulatory measures are part of the Republic of Azerbaijan's ongoing commitment to safeguarding its cultural heritage and protecting the architectural authenticity of the capital's most significant historical district against unauthorized urban development.
