Police officers in Azerbaijan's southern Astara district have seized 45 kilograms of narcotics and detained two suspects attempting to smuggle the drugs into the country, officials announced.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported that the operation was conducted by the officers of the Main Drug Fight Department. The detained individuals were identified as previously convicted Tural Bakirov, 38, and Mehman Abdurahmanov, 53. Law enforcement officers seized 45 kilograms of marijuana enriched with psychotropic substances, as well as 650 methadone pills. A criminal case has been initiated, and investigations are currently underway.
Azerbaijan's law enforcement agencies have recently intensified operations along the country's borders to prevent transit drug trafficking. The Astara district, which shares a border with Iran, remains a key area where the Ministry of Internal Affairs and State Border Service conduct regular operations to combat international drug smuggling networks.
