The European Commission has announced the allocation of €1.4 billion to Ukraine, representing the fifth tranche of financial support derived from the proceeds of frozen Russian Central Bank sovereign assets. This latest disbursement underscores the European Union's ongoing commitment to assisting Kyiv amidst the ongoing conflict.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the transfer. She stated that the Commission received the €1.4 billion on August 3, generated from the reinvestment of frozen Russian assets for the first half of 2026.
"This funding will be directed toward supporting Ukraine," von der Leyen noted, emphasizing that this payment is part of a broader, established mechanism for utilizing the proceeds from immobilized Russian assets. According to official European Commission data, the total volume of funds allocated to Ukraine through this specific mechanism has now reached €8 billion.
The European Union and its international partners have frozen hundreds of billions of dollars in Russian sovereign assets since the escalation of the conflict in February 2022. The use of interest generated from these assets to fund Ukraine's defense and reconstruction efforts has become a central pillar of Western financial support for the country.
