European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas have welcomed the announcement of an agreement between the United States and Iran.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Costa, von der Leyen, and Kallas shared their respective statements via the social media platform X.

"I welcome the agreement announced by Washington and Tehran. I hope this leads to the end of hostilities and the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. I highly appreciate the diplomatic efforts of everyone who made this agreement possible," Antonio Costa wrote.

Von der Leyen emphasized that the current priority is for the parties to implement the agreement swiftly and fully.

"The agreement paves the way for broader discussions on peace and security in the Middle East. It must also put an end to Iran's nuclear and ballistic programs, as well as its destabilizing activities in the region. And, of course, there can be no peace in the Middle East as long as Lebanon is at war. Europe once again calls on all parties to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity and to ensure a real ceasefire," she stated.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas added that the agreement announced by the US and Iran regarding the cessation of hostilities and the restoration of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz could represent a significant potential breakthrough.

Previously, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that an agreement had been reached between the US and Iran. According to his statement, the document is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on June 19, and the parties have already agreed to halt military operations.

The diplomatic efforts surrounding this agreement are viewed as a critical juncture for regional stability. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime chokepoint, through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes, making the restoration of free navigation a matter of global economic importance.
