Türkiye is set to place its maritime zones extending into international waters under enhanced legal protection as part of a new legislative initiative. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing reports from TRT Haber, the move aims to solidify the country's strategic presence in surrounding seas.
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is currently drafting an independent bill within the framework of the "Blue Homeland" (Mavi Vatan) doctrine. This legislation is designed to provide a legal guarantee for Türkiye's rights and interests in the Black Sea, Mediterranean, and Aegean seas. Under the proposed regulations, the boundaries of Türkiye's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf will be codified into primary law, establishing clear legal standards for jurisdiction and protection in these maritime areas.
The draft bill is expected to be submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM) following the Eid al-Adha holiday. The "Blue Homeland" concept, which has become a cornerstone of Türkiye's maritime strategy, emphasizes the country's sovereign rights over its maritime jurisdictions and energy resources. This legislative step follows years of increasing regional activity, including seismic research and drilling operations, aimed at securing energy independence and protecting national security interests in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.
