Turkish activists detained by Israeli forces during a humanitarian mission to Gaza are scheduled to arrive in Istanbul today, following their transfer to Greece for repatriation.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, 175 activists were transported to the Greek island of Crete after the flotilla was intercepted. The Turkish nationals among the group are expected to arrive at Istanbul Airport between 17:00 and 18:00 local time.
The Global Sumud Flotilla’s "Spring 2026 Mission" originally departed from Barcelona, Spain, on April 12, aimed at delivering vital humanitarian aid and breaking the blockade on Gaza. After being joined by additional participants in Sicily, Italy, the fleet resumed its course on April 26. However, on the night of April 29, Israeli forces intervened in international waters near Crete, leading to the seizure of several vessels.
Flotilla officials stated that the mission included 345 participants from 39 different countries. During the intervention, which occurred approximately 600 nautical miles from Gaza, 180 individuals were reportedly detained and 21 boats were seized by the Israeli military. Meanwhile, 31 boats managed to enter Greek territorial waters. The mission represents one of several international efforts organized by civil society groups to provide direct aid to the Gaza Strip amid ongoing regional tensions.
