A tragic incident occurred on Sunday in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, where a hot air balloon carrying 21 passengers caught fire mid-flight. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the balloon lost control after flames engulfed the craft, leading to a fatal crash.
The press office of the Santa Catarina state government confirmed that 13 people, including the pilot, survived the incident. Speaking to journalists, state police representative Tiago Luiz Lemos stated that the pilot's testimony has provided initial insights into the sequence of events. The pilot reported that upon noticing the fire in the basket, he immediately initiated an emergency descent and instructed passengers to jump as the balloon neared the ground.
However, the situation deteriorated rapidly. While some passengers managed to jump to safety, the rapid spread of the fire and a loss of balance caused the balloon to ascend unexpectedly before crashing. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the precise technical causes of the tragedy. Hot air balloon accidents, while relatively rare, often involve complex factors such as equipment failure or adverse weather conditions, and aviation safety boards in Brazil are currently reviewing maintenance records and flight protocols associated with this operator.
