A new study conducted in the United States has revealed that the consumption of sugary beverages may significantly increase the risk of developing stomach cancer. According to the findings published in the journal Gastro Hep Advances, individuals who consume at least one serving of sugary drinks daily are approximately 2.45 times more likely to develop stomach cancer compared to those who do not consume such beverages, reports the Operative Information Center-OMM.
Andrew T. Chan, a gastroenterologist and lead author of the study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital, stated that this is the first research of its kind to demonstrate a correlation between sugary drink consumption and stomach cancer within the U.S. population. He noted that while stomach cancer ranks as the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, there remains limited data on how dietary habits contribute to the development of this specific malignancy.
Researchers analyzed data from two large-scale studies, encompassing a total of 112,284 participants. Over the monitoring period from 1986 to 2022, 278 cases of stomach cancer were recorded. After adjusting for potential risk factors, the analysis indicated that consuming at least one serving—approximately 237 milliliters—of sugary drinks, such as sodas, fruit juices, or sports drinks, more than doubles the risk of stomach cancer. The increased risk was observed to be approximately two-fold in men and nearly three-fold in women.
While debates regarding the health impacts of artificial sweeteners continue, the study did not establish a definitive link between beverages containing artificial sweeteners and stomach cancer. Experts emphasize that this is an observational study and does not definitively prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. In other words, it cannot be conclusively stated that sugary drinks are the direct cause of stomach cancer; however, the data indicates a strong association between the two factors.
The precise mechanisms by which sugary beverages might increase the risk of stomach cancer have not yet been fully determined. Researchers are currently investigating potential contributing factors, including weight gain, insulin resistance, imbalances in steroid hormones, systemic inflammation, DNA damage, and disruptions to the gut microbiota.
