The United States is working to form a new diplomatic mechanism aimed at preventing potential military confrontation between Turkey, Israel, and Syria.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq, Tom Barrack, told Reuters that he discussed the recent Israeli strikes on the Abu Zuhur airbase in northern Syria, near the Turkish border.
Barrack stated that the Turkish side received no prior warning regarding the Israeli attack. He noted that the movement of Israeli aircraft toward Turkish borders caused concern in Ankara regarding potential countermeasures. The diplomat emphasized that the restraint shown by the parties prevented a more serious confrontation, highlighting the critical need for operational information exchange between Turkey, Israel, and Syria.
Washington views the establishment of a communication mechanism as a priority to prevent future incidents. This initiative comes amid concerns that Israeli strikes on military facilities in Syria could lead to an increased Turkish military presence in the region. The US official believes that direct and operational communication could help avoid misunderstandings and unexpected military escalation.
According to Syrian state media, Israeli forces conducted eight airstrikes targeting the runway and warehouses of the Abu Zuhur airbase. Ankara has characterized the move as a "reckless action," strongly condemning the attack and calling on the international community to refrain from steps that increase regional tensions. The proposed tripartite mechanism is seen as crucial for de-escalating the situation between Turkey and Israel.
