British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran, emphasizing its importance for regional and global stability. The Prime Minister expressed his support for the diplomatic breakthrough, which aims to de-escalate tensions that have recently impacted international maritime routes and regional security.
"I welcome the ceasefire agreement reached last night. This will give the region and the world a chance to breathe, even if it is short-term," Starmer wrote on his official X account, according to Operative Information Center-OMM. He further noted that the international community must work collectively to solidify this pause into a permanent solution: "Together with our partners, we must do everything we can to support this ceasefire, ensure its sustainability, turn it into a long-term agreement, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz."
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes daily. Tensions in this corridor often lead to fluctuations in global energy markets and heightened security concerns for international shipping. This latest diplomatic effort, supported by the UK and other global powers, is seen as a vital step toward restoring freedom of navigation and reducing the risk of a wider conflict in the Middle East.
