Romanian radar surveillance systems detected a violation of the country's airspace by a Russian drone during an overnight attack on Ukraine. The incident has prompted an immediate response from Bucharest and its international partners.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Reuters and the Romanian Ministry of Defense, contact with the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was lost near the border village of Kiliya-Veke. The Ministry strongly condemned Russia's actions, stating that it remains in constant coordination with allied states regarding the breach.
"We resolutely condemn the actions of the Russian Federation, which threaten regional security and constitute a serious violation of international law. The Ministry of National Defense continues to coordinate with allied structures, monitors the situation, and is prepared to take necessary measures to protect Romanian territory and its population," the Ministry stated in an official release.
This incident occurs amid heightened tensions in the Black Sea region as Russia continues its military operations against Ukrainian infrastructure near the Danube River. Romania, a NATO member since 2004, has frequently reported debris from Russian drones falling on its territory during strikes on Ukrainian ports. Such incursions have led to increased NATO air policing missions and the deployment of additional air defense systems in the region to ensure the security of the alliance's eastern flank.
