The Kremlin has clarified Russia's position regarding its potential role in facilitating negotiations to ease tensions between the United States and Iran.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Dmitry Peskov, the Press Secretary for the Russian President, informed journalists that while Russia is not currently acting as a formal mediator in the US-Iran conflict, Moscow remains open to supporting a diplomatic resolution. Peskov noted that the situation in the Persian Gulf remains "very fragile and difficult to predict," but expressed hope for the continuation of the negotiation process. According to him, Russia has repeatedly emphasized at various levels its readiness to provide any necessary support to achieve a peaceful settlement and strengthen diplomatic efforts in the region.
The geopolitical landscape in the Middle East has seen renewed focus following the inauguration of US President Donald Trump in January 2025. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia has historically maintained significant influence in regional security matters and was a key signatory to the original Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The stability of the Persian Gulf is of critical importance not only for global energy markets but also for regional neighbors, including Azerbaijan, which maintains a balanced foreign policy and advocates for peace and security across the broader Caspian and Middle Eastern corridors.
