Russia and Ukraine have carried out another prisoner-of-war exchange, marking a significant development in the ongoing conflict.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense, 103 Russian servicemen were returned from territories under Kyiv's control on August 19. Simultaneously, it was reported that an equal number of 103 Ukrainian soldiers were handed over to the Ukrainian side.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the liberated Russian soldiers are currently in Belarus, where they are receiving assistance from the Russian Federation's Commissioner for Human Rights, Yana Lantratova. According to official reports, the servicemen will receive initial medical and psychological support before being transferred to hospitals under the jurisdiction of the Russian Ministry of Defense for further rehabilitation.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) acted as a mediator in facilitating this latest exchange. Prisoner swaps have become a critical, albeit intermittent, diplomatic channel between Moscow and Kyiv since the escalation of the conflict in February 2022, often involving third-party mediation to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape.
