The Romanian Parliament has approved a proposal by President Nicusor Dan for the temporary deployment of US troops and military equipment to the country to support operations in Iran and the Middle East.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media, that the decision was passed with 272 votes in favor, 18 against, and 5 abstentions.
During the parliamentary session, opposition leader George Simion criticized the move, claiming the decision was made in haste and could negatively impact the future of the Romanian people. Despite these objections, the legislative body moved forward with the authorization, aligning with the country's strategic defense commitments.
Romania's supreme defense body had previously approved a request on March 11 from the United States to increase its military presence and utilize Romanian airbases to support military operations in Iran and the broader Middle East region.
President Nicusor Dan stated that the approval will facilitate the temporary deployment of personnel and defense hardware, including aircraft refueling capabilities and satellite communication and monitoring equipment. Following the initial executive approval, the proposal was formally submitted to and ratified by the parliament.
This strategic move comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Under the administration of US President Donald Trump, the United States has continued to strengthen its military cooperation with NATO allies in Eastern Europe to ensure regional security and rapid response capabilities. Romania, a key NATO member since 2004, serves as a vital hub for the alliance's eastern flank, hosting several strategic facilities that support international security missions.
