President Ilham Aliyev has signed a decree on additional measures to improve the drinking water supply for the population in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the document was signed in accordance with the "Action Plan for 2026-2030 on ensuring the efficient use of water resources in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic." The primary objective of the decree is to enhance the quality and accessibility of drinking water in several residential areas across the region.
Under the decree, the State Water Resources Agency, in coordination with the Plenipotentiary Representation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, is tasked with the preparation of design and estimate documentation, as well as the drilling of 40 sub-artesian wells. These measures will cover 38 settlements with a combined population of more than 80,000 people, ensuring a sustainable and reliable water supply for the local communities.
The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan, has prioritized infrastructure development and resource management as part of the broader socio-economic development strategy. This latest initiative aligns with Azerbaijan's national goals to modernize rural infrastructure and ensure environmental sustainability. By utilizing sub-artesian wells, the government aims to mitigate water scarcity challenges and improve the living standards of residents in the region's more remote areas.
