President Ilham Aliyev has sent a congratulatory letter to President of the Republic of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu on the occasion of the country's Independence Day.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the letter states:
“On the occasion of the national holiday of the Republic of Maldives – Independence Day, I extend my most sincere congratulations and best wishes to you and your people on my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Azerbaijan.
We are pleased with the current dynamics of the development of relations between Azerbaijan and the Maldives and the expansion of our mutually beneficial cooperation. The implementation of direct flights between our two countries, as well as the recent mutual visa exemption for citizens holding general passports, has given a significant impetus to the development of people-to-people contacts, particularly in the tourism sector.
I believe that we will continue to make joint efforts to strengthen the friendly relations between our countries, which are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties this year, and to enrich our cooperation of mutual interest with new content.
On this remarkable day, I wish you good health, happiness, and success in your activities, and peace and prosperity to the friendly people of the Maldives.”
The diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and the Maldives have seen a notable uptick in engagement recently. The introduction of direct air links and the visa-free regime are part of a broader strategy by Baku to strengthen ties with island nations and expand its tourism and cultural footprint in the Indian Ocean region.
