Pope Leo XIV has expressed a cautious approach toward linking the upcoming visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to the Vatican with specific "current political issues," instead highlighting dialogue as the primary objective.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Radio-1, that the Pontiff informed journalists the visit is largely diplomatic and general in nature.
The Pope noted that Rubio's itinerary includes an initial meeting with him, followed by formal negotiations at the Vatican Secretariat of State. "I hope there will be an open and good dialogue that builds trust for mutual understanding. I do not think this visit is only about today's specific issues," Pope Leo XIV stated. The Vatican side emphasized that the main goal of the meeting is to strengthen the atmosphere of dialogue and understanding in international relations.
This high-level diplomatic engagement occurs within the broader context of the foreign policy initiatives led by the administration of US President Donald Trump, who assumed office in January 2025. The Holy See frequently serves as a neutral ground for international diplomacy, focusing on humanitarian concerns and global stability. Such meetings are traditionally viewed as opportunities to align perspectives on global challenges and reinforce bilateral ties between the United States and the Vatican.
