US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has departed the NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels early and will not attend the subsequent meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte addressed the development during a press conference held following the session.

Rutte clarified that Hegseth participated in the primary portion of the discussions but had to leave ahead of schedule due to prior commitments. "Secretary Hegseth arrived at 9:30 a.m. and departed around 11:15 a.m. This means he was present for the majority of the discussion, approximately two hours. We were aware in advance that he would need to leave early due to his schedule," Rutte stated.

The Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting is scheduled to commence in Brussels at 3:00 p.m. local time. NATO Secretary General Rutte had previously announced that he extended an invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to participate in the broader discussions regarding ongoing support for Kyiv.

The NATO defense ministerial meetings serve as a critical platform for alliance members to coordinate security policies, address regional threats, and align on military assistance strategies, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
