Starting August 15, additional bus services operating between the "Nizami" and "28 May" metro stations in Baku will be subject to a fare, according to an official announcement.
In a statement to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Bakhtiyar Mammadov, spokesperson for the Baku Metro CJSC, confirmed the new transport policy. He noted that the buses will run at intervals of less than five minutes.
"There will be six express buses operating between these stations. This initiative is designed to provide passengers with an alternative travel option between key city points without relying solely on the metro system," Mammadov explained. He further elaborated on the logistical challenges, noting that while a single metro train can transport 1,600 passengers, maintaining a bus frequency comparable to the metro's high-capacity intervals—which currently see trains arriving every 2 minutes and 30 seconds on the Icherisheher-Hazi Aslanov line—is technically unfeasible. Providing equivalent capacity would require approximately 40 buses, each with an 80-passenger capacity.
This adjustment is part of broader preparations for the upcoming construction phase of the project to separate the Red and Green lines of the Baku Metro. During this period, trains traveling from the "Darnagul" direction will terminate at "Nizami" station before returning, necessitating alternative transport solutions for commuters navigating the city center.
The Baku Metro, which serves as the backbone of public transportation in the capital, regularly undergoes modernization and infrastructure expansion to accommodate the city's growing population and traffic demands.
