Polish President Karol Nawrocki held a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit currently taking place in Ankara.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, President Nawrocki announced the meeting during a press conference broadcast on the official NATO website. The Polish leader described the discussion with the Ukrainian President as constructive and cordial, noting that the two sides exchanged views on a range of bilateral and regional issues.
During the talks, President Nawrocki addressed historical sensitivities, emphasizing that Poland and Europe cannot accept positive references to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Despite these historical disagreements and existing differences of opinion, the Polish President stressed that the dialogue between Warsaw and Kyiv must continue to ensure regional stability.
The NATO summit in Ankara serves as a critical platform for member states and partners to address security challenges in Eastern Europe and beyond. Such high-level meetings are essential for coordinating defense strategies and managing diplomatic relations amidst the ongoing geopolitical complexities in the region.
It should be noted that tensions have occasionally surfaced regarding historical narratives. Previously, members of the European Parliament from the party led by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk demanded criticism of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an annual report concerning Ukraine's application for European Union membership. A vote on this matter is expected to take place on July 8.
