The death toll from the devastating floods currently affecting the Indian state of Assam has continued to rise, according to the latest official reports.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that, based on data from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two additional fatalities were recorded within the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of lives lost to the natural disaster to 100.
According to the agency, more than 1.1 million people across 25 districts in the state have been affected by the flooding. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the ongoing crisis in a statement posted on his social media account on X.
The torrential rains have also inflicted significant damage on the region's agricultural sector. Experts estimate that approximately 16,951 hectares of farmland have been submerged, threatening local livelihoods and food security.
It is worth noting that the monsoon season, which typically spans from June to September across South Asia, frequently results in large-scale flooding, infrastructure destruction, and significant loss of life in countries including India and Pakistan. These annual weather patterns often overwhelm local drainage systems and emergency response capabilities, necessitating large-scale humanitarian relief efforts.
