A reported attack on an oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz has heightened regional maritime tensions.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing reports from Iranian state television, a tanker was targeted after allegedly failing to comply with warnings to change its course. The vessel, identified as the Qatar-flagged "Al-Rekayyat," was reportedly planning to transit along the Oman route with support from the US Navy. Reports indicate that despite repeated warnings to alter its trajectory, the vessel continued on its path, leading to the incident.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has confirmed receiving a distress signal from a tanker traveling southward off the coast of Oman. While Iranian officials have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, the news outlet Axios, citing two US officials, has alleged that the attack was carried out by Iranian forces.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, serving as the primary route for a significant portion of global oil exports. The incident occurred just one day after the UKMTO issued an advisory regarding the potential for unauthorized use of the Southern Corridor in the Strait. Iran has previously asserted that all vessels transiting through the waterway must operate with its authorization, a stance that frequently clashes with international maritime laws regarding freedom of navigation.
