A joint operation by Azerbaijan's State Border Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has successfully prevented a large-scale drug smuggling attempt from Iran into Azerbaijan.
According to the joint press services of the agencies reporting to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the operation was conducted on May 23 in the service area of the "Lankaran" border detachment of the Border Troops. Law enforcement officers seized 38 kilograms and 130 grams of various narcotics, alongside 2,890 psychotropic Methadone M-40 tablets. Operational and investigative measures are currently underway to identify other members of the smuggling network.
Azerbaijan shares a long southern border with Iran, which is frequently targeted by transnational drug traffickers attempting to transport narcotics along the southern route toward Europe. The State Border Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs have intensified joint operations in recent years, resulting in numerous high-profile seizures and the dismantling of organized smuggling rings in the border regions.
