The inauguration and oath-taking ceremony for Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is scheduled to take place today.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Fars News Agency, that the event is set to begin at 15:00 local time (15:30 Baku time) at Azadi Square in central Tehran. The transition follows the formal decision by the Assembly of Experts to elect Mojtaba Khamenei as the nation's highest authority.
According to reports from The New York Times, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the previous leader, maintains deep institutional ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Sources indicate that the IRGC played a decisive role in advocating for his appointment following the death of Ali Khamenei. The former leader was killed at his residence on February 28, 2026, during the initial phase of a joint military operation conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran.
The position of the Supreme Leader is the highest state authority in the Islamic Republic of Iran, wielding ultimate command over the armed forces, judicial system, and state media. Under the Iranian constitution, the Assembly of Experts is the deliberative body empowered to appoint and oversee the Supreme Leader. This transition occurs during a period of significant regional tension and internal restructuring within the Iranian political hierarchy.
