German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has extended his congratulations to Azerbaijan and Armenia following the signing of a peace agreement in Washington in August 2025.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Chancellor made these remarks during a joint press conference with President Ilham Aliyev.
Chancellor Merz expressed his belief that the signing of this document in Washington will significantly contribute to the development of the South Caucasus region. "Peace, security, and stability are essential for the South Caucasus. Germany and the European Union have a profound interest in stability within this geopolitically significant region," he stated.
The Chancellor further noted that the agreements between Azerbaijan and Armenia create new opportunities to normalize relations and resolve a conflict that has persisted for decades. "Stability in the region also opens new avenues for expanding economic cooperation between our countries," Merz added.
The peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia has been a focal point of international diplomacy for several years. Following the end of the conflict in the Garabagh region, both nations have engaged in various negotiation formats, including those mediated by the United States, the European Union, and other international partners, aimed at establishing long-term peace and border delimitation.
