A massive aerial assault by Russia on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and surrounding residential areas has resulted in significant casualties and infrastructure damage.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing data from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS), preliminary reports indicate that 14 people have been killed in the overnight missile and drone strikes.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the city came under ballistic missile attack starting at 01:33 local time. According to his statement, 26 people have been injured, and destruction has been recorded in various districts of the city. In the Holosiivskyi district, a strike on an industrial facility caused an ammonia leak. Search and rescue operations are currently underway at the affected sites.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the Russian military launched a total of 28 missiles, including 24 ballistic missiles, and 115 armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) across the country overnight. Air defense forces successfully neutralized 98 of the drones; however, the aerial assault remains ongoing, with several enemy UAVs still detected within Ukrainian airspace.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which escalated significantly in February 2022, has frequently seen major urban centers targeted by long-range weaponry. Such attacks on critical infrastructure and residential zones have become a recurring feature of the hostilities, prompting continuous international calls for de-escalation and the protection of civilian populations.
